Francis Light Library

Francis Light Library is a centro integral for The Ship Campus community to search for resources and tranquility. It is the centre for staff and students to have access to the library resources, practical facilities, and services. The academic resources provided are up-to-date and accommodate the needs of the academic community to navigate programs and research.

The library is located at Deck 8 of The Ship Campus. The services include full access to online resources as well as interesting collection of both academic and casual books. In terms of tranquility, Francis Light Library offers a convenient and relaxed environment including quiet zone area, casual study area, fully equipped discussion rooms and Brighton Beach Boxes for private study.

Library Policies

Rules & Regulations

  • Users must wear or bring student’s card when entering the library.
  • Smoking, eating and drinking are strictly NOT allowed inside the library.
  • Reservation of seats is not permitted. The library staff may remove books and other articles left for any length of time on chairs and tables.
  • Users must be decently dress and conduct themselves properly in the library.
  • The discussion rooms are available on booking basis and must be used strictly for group discussion only.
  • The library will not accept responsibility for the loss or misplacement of personal belongings.
  • Student who found vandalized any library books or furniture will be penalized.
  • Rearrange of library furniture such as sofas, table, etc. is not permitted.
  • Mobile phones are not allowed to be used in the library. Turn it off or put into silent mode before entering the library.
  • The library staff on duty have the right to request user to leave the premises if he/she found to be violating any of the library rules.
  • SILENCE must be observed in the library at all times.
  • The library reserves the right to amend these rules from time to time.

Membership

  • All registered students and staff of Peninsula College are automatically members of the Library.
  • Only those with ID card are allowed to use the library services and facilities.

Circulation Policy

Borrowing

  • Materials taken out from the library must be properly checked out.
  • Users have to produce their students/staff card to borrow items.
  • Book number of loans for each registered member is determined by his/her membership category. Refer to table 1.
  • Borrowers are responsible for all materials borrowed under their names.
  • Lost/damaged materials should be reported immediately to the librarian.

Renewal

  • Renewal can be done twice only through online library portal or at the library counter.
  • Renewals for overdue books are not allowed.
  • Users are allowed to renew one (1) day before the due date or on the due date, borrowed item is not requested by other users, user not exceeded the maximum renewal limit and user record is not blocked for any reason.

Returning

  • Borrowed materials must be returned on or before the due date.
  • For lost material, the fine will be imposed, calculated from the date the material should have been returned until the date it was reported lost.
  • Users who have outstanding fines will have their borrowing privileges suspended until the fines are settled.
  • The overdue notice will be sent to the users.

Overdue Fines

The fines for all categories of books are assessed at the rates below in Table 2:

Book lost / damaged books

  • Items not returned within 2 months from the due date are presumed lost and the user will be need to replace the book or billed for the cost of replacing the items.
  • If the item is damaged, all cost involved on repairing or replacing the item will be charge by the user.
Book Replacement Cost Replacement
Replacement will have to be made within 4 weeks from the date it was reported lost. Cost replacement will have to be made within 4 weeks from the date it was reported lost.
Replacement of soft cover for hardcover copy is not accepted. Pay current price of the books plus RM30 processing fee.
Must be the latest edition including RM30 processing fee. Payments for replacement of lost/damaged materials are not returnable after a month from the date the payment is made.

Service And Facilities

Discussion Room Policy

You are required to abide by the following rules and regulations:

  • Users are required to use the Discussion Room for group study and discussions only.
  • Use of the room is limited to a maximum of three hours. Users that book more than three hours will be cancelled by library staff.
  • If the room still empty after booking is made in 15 minute, library staff has the right to cancel the booking immediately.
  • Please rearrange the chairs/tables after use.
  • Please ensure that the room is clean before you leave.

The following are prohibited inside the discussion rooms:

  • Food is not permitted.
  • Loud noises.
  • Bringing in additional chairs/other pieces of furniture.
  • Leaving any kind of garbage including paper/plastic, etc.

Fine and Penalties:

  • Users who intentionally damage the facilities will be fined RM50.00 and they will receive a warning letter.
  • Users who use the Discussion Room without making a reservation will get a verbal warning.
  • If they repeat the same mistake again, they will receive a warning letter.
  • Users who eat in the Discussion Room shall leave immediately and their reservation will be terminated. If they repeat the same mistake again, they will receive a warning letter.
  • Users who exhibit inappropriate behavior need to leave the Discussion Room and their booking will be terminated. If they repeat the same mistake, they will receive a warning letter.

Library Collections

The library has diverse range of collections which are categorized as follows: 

Open Shelf – Consist of collection of books covering all subject areas offered by Peninsula College as well as general additional references.

References – Includes dictionaries, encyclopaedia, handbook, directories and other references. This materials is not for loan. It was labelled by ‘REF’ at the book spine label.

Red Spot Collection – Collection of textbooks and reference books which are not for loan. High demand /limited edition references. It was labelled by ‘RS’ at the book spine label.

Leisure Reading Collections – Collections of light reading and fun stuff to read which consist of non-fiction and fiction books. This collection are for loan.

Users can search for Printed Resources and Francis Light Digital Collections by using KOHA OPAC.

MEMBERSHIP

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE LIBRARY MEMBERSHIP?

a. All PCN, TSC, Penskills, PHE staff and students are automatically members of the Francis Light Library.

b. External membership kindly refer to ‘Services‘ under ‘External Membership

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO ENTER THE LIBRARY?

Only registered members of the Francis Light library are allowed to enter the library. Users must display their ID cards upon entering the Library at all times.

FOOD AND DRINK ALLOWED INSIDE THE LIBRARY?

Foods and drinks are not allowed to be brought into the library except for plain water.

WHAT IS LIBRARY ACCOUNT?

Library account is a platform for library members to manage their circulation activities such as online renewing, checking loan details, and checking fines and make online reservation.

WHAT IS MY LOGIN ID AND PASSWORD?

Your login ID is your student’s email and your password is your student ID (which can be changed later).

WHAT IS THE PENALTY FEE FOR A LATE RETURN/OVERDUE BOOK?

Penalty for 1-7 days is RM1/day. More than 7 days RM1.50/day.

WHAT SHOULD I DO WHEN I LOSE OR DAMAGE LIBRARY MATERIALS?

Please report the damage/loss to the staff at the Library Counter immediately.

WHAT IS OPAC STAND FOR AND IT’S FUNCTION?

OPAC is stand for Open Public Access Catalog. It is used to search and locate materials available in the Francis Light Library.

I CAN’T FIND THE BOOK I NEED ON THE SHELVES, YET THE OPAC SHOWS IT’S NOT BEING BORROWED.

This means that the book might be misplaced by other users. Please report this to the staff at the counter. Our staff will try to locate the book for you.
